Wheat is the second largest grain worldwide based on grain acreage and second largest based on total production volume. The global production volume of wheat came to almost 793 million metric tons in the marketing year of 2024/25. This was an increase of about two million tons compared to the previous year. Wheat stocks, however, are forecast to decrease slightly to about 265 million metric tons worldwide by 2024/2025.
Many developing countries are highly dependent on the Ukraine and Russia's wheat imports. As of 2024, Russia exported 43 million tons of wheat worldwide. In the crop year 2023/24, the export volume of wheat products from Ukraine amounted to 17.5 million metric tons. The figure fluctuated over the period observed and was projected to drop to 14 million metric tons in the crop year 2024/25.
Leading producers
The European Union is the second ranked wheat producing region. It was forecast that the region would yield more than 136.9 million metric tons of wheat by 2033, accounting for about one-fifth of the world wheat production. In 2024, around 46 million were planted and 38.5 million acres of wheat were harvested in the United States. Wheat consumption
As one of the most important staple foods, a large variety of different products contain high amounts of wheat. Global consumption of wheat saw a recent increase, with just under 802 million metric tons consumed in 2024/2025 marketing year. In 2024/25, China was forecast to consume about 151 million metric tons of wheat. The global per capita food use of wheat generally stood above 65 kilograms per year in the last decade.
