Number of active beer breweries in Belgium 2009-2023

Belgian beer is well-known all over the world, and brand names like Stella Artois and Jupiler are household names not only in Belgium itself, but also across the border. In 2023, over 400 beer breweries were active in the country, double the number of just six years prior. Together, these breweries produced around 21.5 million hectoliters of beer in 2023. 

 Beer exports 

  Although Belgians drink nearly 70 liters of beer per capita per year, they cannot drink all the beer produced in the country by themselves. The majority of the beer produced is therefore exported. In 2021, beer exports from Belgium amounted to roughly 17.6 million hectoliters.

Destination countries

   The most important destination countries for beer exported from Belgium are the neighboring countries: France, the Netherlands and Germany. Belgian beer is however also exported further afield, with the United States ranking fourth in the list of leading destinations for beer exports. Belgian beer is also popular in Spain, China, Korea, and Russia.
