Belgium: annual volume of beer consumed 2008-2021

Between 2008 and 2021, the Belgian beer consumption decreased. Beer consumption peaked in 2009, at nearly 8.7 million hectoliters, but afterwards declined nearly year on year. In 2021, beer consumption was just over 6.4million liters, or over one million more than the year before. Because of the pandemic, 2020 was the worst year for Belgian brewers in recent history.
Lager most popular beer type
A recent survey asked Belgian respondents about their favorite beer types. In 2019, about one quarter of participants stated that their preferred beer was lager, making this the most popular beer type in the country. By comparison, abbey beer was a favorite among 13 percent of survey participants.
Drinking beer at home
In another survey, Belgians indicated that they regularly drink beer at home. When asked why they drink beer here, the most frequently stated reasons were that the home offered a more relaxed atmosphere (66 percent) and that it does not require a sober driver (60 percent). The ability to smoke a cigarette with the beer seemed less important, as only three percent of respondents named this as a reason to drink at home.
