Electric bike sales in the EU 2015-2023
The number of e-bikes sold in Europe has been growing steadily over the past years. Particularly, 2020 saw a large year-on-year increase of about 27 percent, at least partly fueled by the rise in popularity of cycling during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sales continued to increase in the following years, totaling nearly 5.2 million e-bikes sold by the end of 2023.
Largest electric bike markets in Europe
Germany is not only the largest market for conventional bikes, it is also the largest e-bike market on the continent. In 2023, Germans bought more than 2.1 million new electric bikes. This meant that over two fifths of all e-bikes sold in the European Union were sold in Germany.
E-bike imports
The leading suppliers of e-bikes to the European Union in 2023 were Taiwan, Vietnam, and China. While over 40 million bikes were imported from Taiwan, around 19 million and 13 million units were imported from Vietnam and China respectively. The EU had introduced anti-dumping tariffs on e-bike imports from China in 2019, which had impacted import volumes. However, these measures were set to expire at the beginning of 2024.
