Since 2013, United Airlines has purchased more sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) than the other global airlines, with an offtake volume of more than 14.3 billion liters. Southwest Airlines ranked second with a total offtake volume of over 4.16 billion liters of SAF.
About Sustainable Aviation Fuel
Sustainable Aviation Fuel is a type of liquid fuel used in powering aircraft engines that can reduce the carbon dioxide emissions in the aviation industry up to 80 percent. SAF is produced from sustainable feedstock, such as cooking oil, waste oils, municipal non-food waste.
New technology aircraft
The usage of sustainable aviation fuels alone is not enough to achieve the net-zero carbon emission targets in the aviation industry. The aircraft manufacturers initiated the production of new aircraft and propulsion technologies in order to help achieving climate change mitigation targets. The new aircraft's fuel and energy efficiency allows airlines to reduce their emissions levels. In 2023, Boeing and Airbus invested around 3.37 billion and 3.26 billion U.S. dollars in upgrading their aircraft technologies, respectively.
