In January 2022, 42 percent of adults surveyed in the United States who claimed to be familiar with the metaverse said the best way to describe the metaverse was as a virtual, computer-generated world where people can socialize, work and play. One in ten respondents thought that the best way to describe the metaverse was as a new social media platform and just one percent described it as a new entertainment subscription platform.
