A December 2021 study analyzed the main destinations worldwide for wine tourism. It ranked the selected countries based on a series of factors, such as the average consumption of wine, the average cost of a bottle, and the number of wine tours per 100 thousand people. With an index score of 8.28 out of 10, Italy emerged as the leading destination for wine lovers. Of the 10 leading wine countries in the ranking, six were in Europe.

The index was created based on five factors: average consumption per 100,000 people, average production per 100,000 people, vineyards as the surface area of each country, wine tours per 100,000 people, and cost of a bottle of wine.

The source ranked 26 countries based on the chosen factors, assigning for each one a score out of 10. The final index score was calculated as the average result of the points given to each of those factors.
