In 2022 there were approximately 122,746 high school students in England taking French at GCSE level, compared with 107,488 taking Spanish and 34,966 taking German. During the provided time period, the number of students taking German has been declining since 2010 while those taking Spanish has increased. Spanish overtook German as the second most popular language in 2011 with 58,681 taking it at GCSE level, compared with 58,299 pupils taking German.
