Market share of discount stores in Italy 2010-2023

In Italy, the market share of discount stores out of the food retail industry steadily increased to 25 percent as of 2023 estimates. Previous figures related to the domestic market indicated a market share of 12.6 percent in 2010. Over the same period, the sales value of discount stores grew from 14.5 billion euros in 2014 to 22.8 billion euros in 2021.

 Financial KPIs

  In 2017, financial data related to discount stores showed that Eurospin chain performed the highest return on investment at 13.5 percent, followed by Lidl with 9.5 percent of return on investment (ROI) share. Furthermore, the mentioned retail chains had the highest net profit margin with 4.2 and 2.9 percent, respectively. On the other hand, in 2017, Lidl reported higher net sales per unit area than Eurospin: 5,869 euros against 5,842 euros.
