There were 20.2 kidney transplants procedures carried out per million population in Hungary in 2021. This represents a decrease in the number of transplants compared to the previous year. Liver transplants were the second most carried out transplant procedure in Hungary in 2021 at 6.1 per million population, although this had slightly declined since 2016.
Transplant waiting list
There were 1,066 patients waiting for a kidney transplant in Hungary in 2021, which represented a significant increase compared to the previous year. Furhtermore, there were 157 patients waiting for a liver transplant compared to 87 individuals recorded in 2020.
Activity compared to Europe
The rate of kidney transplants in Hungary in 2021 was relatively low compared to other EU countries. Spain had the highest rate of kidney transplants in 2021 at 63.2 per million population which was more than three times the rate of kidney transplant procedures in Hungary. Additionally, Hungary had a low liver transplant rate compared to the rest of Europe in 2021, with only four other countries having a lower rate of liver transplant procedures.
