From 2009 to 2015, the general government gross debt (national debt) relative to GDP in Finland increased significantly each year, reaching a high of 68.3 percent in 2015. Thereafter, the national debt to GDP ratio decreased again. In 2022, the ratio of government debt to GDP reached at 73 percent according to preliminary data.

The reporting is a constituent part of what is known as the Excessive Deficit Procedure (EDP). The data reported by the different Member States are comparable with each other."
