Sales volume of beer in Germany 1993-2023
Germans are buying less beer. As of 2023, around 69.34 million hectoliters of beer were sold in the country, compared to roughly 79.7 million hectoliters a decade ago. While 2022 showed a small increase in sales volume compared to the year before, figures had generally been falling annually during the specified timeline.

The same decreasing trend is visible when looking at figures for per capita beer consumption in Germany. Starting in 1950 and observing roughly the next four decades, Germans drank increasing amounts, while afterward the pattern changed. However, it is worth noting that as such, consumption levels during the 1950s were significantly lower than current ones. In 2022, Germans individually consumed around 89.4 liters of beer. Like other food products and beverages, beer also experienced a significant price spike, with consumer prices growing by around 11.6 percent compared to 2022.
At home and beyond
Domestically, Germany had several brewery groups leading the way in 2022, recording stable sales volume figures compared to the previous year. The Radeberger Gruppe, including such brands as Jever, DAB, Berliner Pilsner, was far ahead of the AB inBev Deutschland (Beck's, Hasseröder) and the Bitburger Braugruppe (König Pilsener, Köstritzer), with around 10.33 million hectoliters sold. Germany exported less beer in recent years, with around 14.3 million hectoliters traveling to other countries in 2023.
