Domestic feature film production volume in Canada 2011-2022

From April 1, 2021, to March 31, 2022, the sum of production budgets in the domestic theatrical feature film industry in Canada amounted to almost 351 million Canadian dollars, up from nearly 273 million dollars a year earlier.

Canada's box office gross

Movie theaters in the northernmost country in the Americas are still struggling to recover from the pandemic. In 2022, Canada's box office revenue grew to 674 million Canadian dollars. However, that figure still does not reach the value recorded in 2019, before the coronavirus outbreak. Meanwhile, Canadian movies' performance at the box office dropped in comparison to the previous year. Local titles grossed 12 million dollars domestically in 2022, down from 18 million two years before.

Film production and total budget

The number of feature films theatrically released in Canada remained below pre-COVID-19 standards. In 2021, cinemas across the country launched 92 domestic movies, down 37 percent from the 145 titles that premiered in 2019. Still, Canada's total film and television production volume amounted to approximately 11.69 billion dollars in the 2021/22 season. That was above the budgets recorded during the two previous years.
