In 2019, the annual volume of passenger transport by all modes of road transportation in Germany remained nearly unchanged from the previous two years at around 981.2 billion passenger kilometers. In 2020, however, road passenger transport fell by about 13 percent as travel was affected by the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, the volume increased and amounted to 836.6 billion passenger kilometers.

Road passenger transport refers to the movement of passengers by motor vehicle across a road network. This includes any person using a passenger car, a bus, or a coach for their journey, counting car drivers but excluding taxi drivers and bus or coach service staff. Road transport can be both national and international, depending on the location where passenger embark and disembark the vehicle.
