In 2022, U.S. pet store revenue is estimated to have reached just over 23.5 billion U.S. dollars, which is a decrease compared to 2021. The revenue of pet stores across the United States is forecast to reach around 24.66 billion U.S. dollars by 2028.

Online versus in-store pet product sales

While the majority of pet food sales were generated in physical stores, online retail channel sales have grown considerably: about a fifth of all pet food sales in the United States were generated online, placing the channel on par with mass merchandisers and wholesale clubs, as well as food stores. Specifically, many shoppers bought their pet products on websites, such as Amazon.com and Chewy.com.

Based on revenue figures, PetSmart Inc. and PETCO Animal Supplies Inc. were the two market leaders within the U.S. pet store industry in 2021. Together, they accounted for approximately 47 percent of the total revenue generated in the United States in that year.
