Municipal waste treatment in France 2021, by type
In 2021, France treated nearly 38 million metric tons of municipal waste. Incineration with energy recovery was the main type of treatment, accounting for one-third of the volume. Another 25 percent of municipal waste was recycled. When also including composting or methanization, and preparation for reuse, this share rises to 44 percent. Around 23 percent of France's municipal waste ended up in landfills. Annual municipal waste generation in France has seen an upward trend since the beginning of the century.
