The net interest margin (NIM) of the banking industry in Austria increased significantly between 2021 and 2023, after a period of notable decline in 2020. In the first two quarters of 2023, the NIM stood at 2.2 percent, the highest margin in the observed period. The NIM is an important profitability indicator that compares the net interest income with the outgoing interest an institution pays.
