While GDP in the southern European country stabilised in the mid-2010s, domestic resource consumption has continued to fall, albeit with smaller increases in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. The relationship between GDP and DMC is keenly debated, and the decoupling of the two indicators is seen as key in ensuring that economic growth is made to be compatible with ecological sustainability.
