Global carbon dioxide removal purchases 2024, by company
Microsoft is the largest buyer of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits worldwide, having purchased more than 6.6 million metric tons of CDR to date. In May 2024, Microsoft signed the largest-ever CDR deal with Swedish energy company Stockholm Exergi to remove more than 3.3 million metric tons of carbon dioxide over a 10-year period from a BECCS plant. The previous largest deal was between Microsoft and the Danish energy company Ørsted.
The country of Denmark was the second-largest purchaser of CDR credits, with the Danish energy Agency awarding contracts to three companies to remove 1.1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide from 2026 to 2023.
