In 2022, there were 59.3 cases of Carbapenem-resistant enterobacteriaceae (CRE) per 100,000 population reported in South Korea. CRE is a bacterial infection resistant to antibiotics commonly used to treat severe bacterial infections, making it difficult to treat. This infection is most commonly encountered in hospitals and long-term care facilities with suboptimal hygiene and maintenance practices.
