Number of first residence permits in Iceland 2009-2019, by grounds
The highest number of first-time resident permits in Iceland between 2009 and 2019 were allocated due to family reasons. Moreover, the number of permits allocated based on other grounds has increased significantly since 2015, up from roughly 110 in 2014 to almost 590 in 2019. Both the number of permits given because of education and remunerated activities reasons have increased since 2015, but the former decreased from 2018 to 2019. In 2019, 665 first-time permits were given due to family reasons.
