According to a survey conducted in 2021 on gender equality in Japan, over 40 percent of respondents did not really have an opinion on the concept of separate surnames for married couples. However, about 43 percent of survey participants were in favor of having the option to choose separate surnames, while only 17 percent disagreed to at least some extent with the concept of separate surnames.
