In 2020, the total number of active physicians reached more than 216.5 thousand at hospitals and 107.2 thousand at medical clinics in Japan, both following a continuous upward trend since 2002. Hospitals in Japan refer to medical institutions that possess facilities for admission of 20 or more inpatients. Medical clinics include institutions that own facilities for admission of fewer than 20 inpatients or no facilities for admission at all.
