Jeonse fraud case share South Korea 2022-2023, by deposit amount
A nationwide police investigation and crackdown on jeonse fraud that took place from July 2022 to May 2023 found that around 34 percent of jeonse fraud cases in South Korea were for deposits between 100 to 200 million South Korean won. According to the source, the amount lost through jeonse fraud in South Korea in that timespan totaled 459.9 million won. Jeonse is a rental system unique to South Korea where tenants pay a large sum of deposit, usually equivalent to more than half of the property's value, in exchange for two years rent. This deposit is meant to be returned by the end of the rental period, but in jeonse fraud the tenants fail to get their deposit back.
