Civilians have become the main victims of armed violence in Mexico, more specifically, of the ongoing drug war or guerra contra el narcotráfico. Since 2007, a total of 5,849 civilians have been killed in confrontations between the armed forces and criminal groups, in stark contrast with the death of 373 members of the armed forces registered in the same time period. 2011 was the deadliest year for civilians, as 1,324 such people lost their life to this war.
