Number of hurricanes worldwide by category 2022

In the 2022 season, roughly half of hurricanes tracked worldwide had a maximum category 1, meaning a sustained wind speeds between 64 and 82 knots. The season also saw nine hurricanes with a category 3 or above, which are thus qualified as major hurricanes. Of these, one was category 5 hurricanes, with sustained wind speeds of 137 knots or more.

South Indian and South Pacific Ocean seasons are defined to start on July 1 of the previous year. The 2022 season therefore runs from July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022.
