Share of civilians killed by security agents in Rio de Janeiro 2021, by race

The share of people of black ethnicity killed by the police in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, reached nearly 87 percent of the total killings in 2021. In comparison, only 13 percent of the people killed during the same period due to police interventions were white. As of that time, in Rio, 51.7 percent of the population was composed of black people, which shows a great disproportion between the share of black population and the share of black victims of security agents. It is worth noting that in 10.5 percent of all cases of civilians killed by police reported in Rio de Janeiro, the ethnicity of the victim was not disclosed, which could entail that the share of black people amongst civilian deaths could be even larger.
