Fossil fuels were the largest source of electricity generation in Hawaii in 2021. Leading the electricity production share, oil accounted for almost two thirds of the power generated in the U.S. state. Coal ranked second, representing some 11.4 percent of Hawaii's electricity production that year. Hawaii had the dirtiest electricity grid in the U.S..
