Transportation shares of total CO₂ emissions in the U.S. 2021, by state
Transportation accounted for 50 percent or more of total energy-related carbon dioxide emissions in ten U.S. states in 2021. Transportation was responsible for 53 percent of California's total CO₂ emissions from energy consumption in 2021. California is the second-largest contributor to U.S. transportation emissions, behind Texas. Although Texas had the highest transportation-related emissions in the U.S. in 2021, they only accounted for 32 percent of the state's total energy-related CO₂ emissions that year.
