Bidders of the Christie's auction of The First 5000 Days by Beeple 2021, by age
On February 25, 2021, the British auction house Christie's officially launched a one-lot sale of the digital artwork "Everydays: The First 5000 Days" by American artist Mike Winkelmann, known as Beeple. In total, 33 active bidders took part in the sale. About 58 percent of them were Millennials. In contrast, only three percent of potential buyers were Baby Boomers. The piece - eventually sold on March 11, 2021, for the astonishing price of 69.3 million U.S. dollars - is a digital artwork, also referred to as "crypto art". It is possible to prove the authenticity of such digital works using blockchain technologies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). These are unique codes that can be assigned to any kind of digital format. This way, even if copies of a digital artwork are shared online, it is possible to determine the original file.
