According to a survey conducted in October 2019, more than 41 percent of parents in Japan stated that building blocks, which can be combined freely, would help in preparing children for programming lessons in school. Less than one fifth of respondents mentioned books and applications that teach computational thinking. Programming classes will become compulsory in Japanese elementary schools by 2020.
