Food trends in Scandinavia - Statistics & Facts

The food market in the Nordic countries enjoyed steady growth in recent years, peaking at almost 87 billion U.S. dollars in 2021. In the coming years, the market is expected to keep growing. As of 2021, the meat segment generated the highest revenue of all food products, with sales amounting to approximately 18 billion U.S. dollars. The dairy products and eggs segment ranked in second place, followed by confectionery and snacks. Vegetables came in fifth place and generated a revenue of around 8.7 billion U.S dollars.

Vegetarians, vegans, and pescatarians

In a survey conducted in several European countries in 2021, 14 percent of respondents from Sweden, 11 percent of respondents from Denmark, and nine percent of respondents from Norway indicated that they avoid eating meat, and either follow a vegetarian, vegan, or pescatarian diet. In another survey from that same year, respondents from Scandinavia were asked whether they had ever tasted ready-made vegetarian/ vegan products; most of them indicated having tried such products.

Plant-based food

When buying plant-based food, the most important decision factor for Norwegians, Swedes, and Danes is taste. In the 2021 survey, Scandinavians also revealed that a reasonable price is an important purchase decision criterion. In 2020, the sales value of plant-based food in Denmark reached its peak compared to the previous two years. In 2018, the sales value of plant-based foods amounted to 23 million euros, after which it grew by seven million euros until 2020. This was the equivalent of a sales volume of around 14 million kilograms/ liters.
