Playing remains a popular pastime, evidenced by German consumers spent increasing amounts of money on video games. In 2023, based on forecast figures, gamers spent 7.1 billion euros, compared to 6.9 billion euros the year before. By 2027, spending is predicted to reach 8.7 billion euros. In terms of age groups among gamers, surveys confirm that all ages play. 18 percent of gamers were aged 50-59 years, while eight percent were younger than 10 years old.
The widespread use of mobile technology has also influenced the video game market in Germany, providing new openings for providers and additional gaming opportunities for consumers. In 2022, in-app purchases of smartphone and tablet gaming apps generated almost 2.8 billion euros in sales revenue, while app purchases brought in six million euros. The largest source of revenue by far was coming from in-app purchases. According to surveys mobile gaming is overtaking console game with 82 percent of gamers stating that they play on their smartphone, whilst only 39 percent played on stationary consoles.
