Apparel and footwear market in Thailand - statistics & facts

The apparel and footwear market in Thailand is built upon the country’s large textile industry, which consists of other sub-sectors such as the spinning industry, the synthetic fiber industry, the weaving industry, and the garment dyeing industry. Thailand is also a popular hub for apparel production and garment outsourcing because of the availability of low-cost labor and its production capabilities. In recent years, production has shifted towards higher quality items to meet new fashion trends and rising demand from domestic consumers.

Thailand’s textile production and the apparel market

Many international brands outsource the production of their apparel and footwear products to Thailand due to the low cost of labor compared to the global average. Thailand has an ample supply of materials consisting of both synthetic fibers and natural fibers. Cotton and silk are the two most well-known fabrics produced in Thailand, with cotton being one of its major exports. Thailand’s leading textile trading partners are the neighboring ASEAN countries, the United States, China, and Japan. As of April 2023, men's and boys' clothing were the main apparel products exported from Thailand. In recent years, the country has become less competitive as a garment production hub compared to Vietnam, China, or Bangladesh. However, garment production in Thailand is transitioning towards quality and sustainability. This shift in production and outsourcing trends partially resulted in higher sales value of apparel and footwear items while also leading to an overall decline in production quantity.

Consumer behavior since the COVID-19 pandemic

During the COVID-19 pandemic, consumers in Thailand became more aware of and paid closer attention to personal wellness. This resulted in greater demand for fashionable sportswear and outdoor apparel, especially for jogging shoes. The purchasing behaviors of Thai consumers shifted throughout the pandemic. In 2020, Thai consumers shopped online instead of visiting physical stores. Despite the popularity of online shopping, as of February 2022, department stores regained their stance as the leading locations to purchase clothes. This was followed by official websites and retail outlets. Many consumers enjoyed the perks of online shopping, such as easy returns, ease of payment, and free delivery. In the same year, Pomelo remained one of the most visited e-commerce sites for fashion in Thailand. In addition, social media has also played a significant role in affecting online consumer purchase behavior in Thailand. As of February 2023, Facebook led as the most-used social media platforms for making online purchases. With that in mind, many fashion brands have leveraged their social media presence by staying active and collaborating with influencers to endorse their brands on their social media platforms.
