Poultry industry in the United Kingdom- statistics & facts

The poultry sector in the UK is adjusting to prevent disease outbreaks; the government announced in 2024 that it is implementing new registration requirements to better protect the industry from potential avian influenza outbreaks in the future. Such changes will be of major relevance to the more than 2,500 companies working on raising poultry in the UK. In 2023, over 1.1 billion broilers, 39 million boiling fowl, and about 8.6 million turkeys were slaughtered in the UK.

Poultry production

In 2022, the UK production value of poultry and poultry meat reached over 3.1 billion British pounds. This translated to an output of around 1.96 million metric tons that year. The overwhelming majority of slaughtered animals were broiler chickens, followed by turkeys. Only a comparatively small number of boiling fowls and ducks are slaughtered every year. The volume of meat produced from broilers, a chicken which is bred specifically for meat production, reached almost 1.8 million metric tons in 2023 in the United Kingdom.

Prices for producers and consumers are on the rise

Some 550 companies in the UK produced poultry meat. In 2022, UK meat and poultry meat product manufacturing had a sales value of approximately 6.78 billion British pounds. Producer prices have gone up for poultry and specifically chicken between 2015 and 2023. In the most recent year, prices have risen drastically. Consumer prices are witnessing similar trends. Between December 2022 and December 2023, the only kind of poultry to decrease in price was a whole rotisserie chicken. Fresh chicken and turkey both increased in price by around six percent. Food price inflation is impacting many segments of the industry in the UK.
