The central European country comprised almost one-fifth of the total population of the EU in that year, with France in second place with 15.19 percent, and Italy in third at 13.21 percent. While there are 27 member states of the European Union in total, approximately two-thirds of the population of the bloc is made up by the seven largest countries: Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Poland, Romania, and the Netherlands. Of the remaining 20 member states, no country makes up more than 3 percent of the EU's total population, with the smallest country, Malta, comprising just 0.12 percent of the total.
