According to a survey conducted in July 2019, 21.8 percent of young Japanese aged between 17 and 19 years old answered that the new consumption tax rate of ten percent was appropriate. The tax increased from eight percent to ten percent on October 1. One fourth of respondents were of the opinion that the former rate of eight percent was appropriate. The long-delayed consumption tax increase was introduced with the aim of funding social welfare programs and reducing public debt.
